town & school

Penzberg:

The town (16.000 inhabitants) is located in the Bavarian upland half way between Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It was first mentioned during medieval times, but stayed a settlement of little importance until the 19th century. During the industrialization this changed dramatically, since large amounts of coal were found within its boundaries. Until the 60ies of the 20th century up to 2000 coalminers were employed in Penzberg at the same time, making it one of the most important mines in Bavaria. Nowadays Roche Diagnostics runs a big production and research center for biopharmaceuticals with more than 4000 employees. In addition to its economic resources Penzberg offers plentiful of opportunities for outdoor activities due to its location in one of the most beautiful areas of Germany, with lakes around and the alps just next door.
